The Crown Braid Hair

Prom season is upon us, and with the social activities of summer like weddings and family gatherings not far off, an easy and chic way to wear your hair down is your secret weapon in standing out at the formal parties of the season. That’s where the Crown Braid style comes in – a sexy, simple twist on a bohemian favourite, perfect for summer.

The beauty of this braid is its ability to act as both a summery, dressed up look that can be worn day and night. It’s the perfect match to an evening gown or summer dress, and gives you the chance to wear your hair down to even the classiest of parties.

To personalize the look, decide how dramatic the crown section itself will be. You have the flexibility to make it as thick or thin as you like, and choose whether it will come across your entire head or just a little to accent the flowing braid that will ultimately rest on the side of your head. For a daytime look, start the braid just slightly off to one side from your usual part, for soft and seamless flow into the side braid. To dramatize the look, start the braid from one side of your head and work your way across to create the full crown from one side to another as it leads into your long, flowing braid.

Individualize the look even further by playing with different sized braids, leaving some hair out, or experimenting with different style braids such as the ever-popular fishtail. As always, finalize the look with the perfect choice of makeup, and you’ll be ready to make a splash wherever you go.

fancy updo with braids

To get this look, start by skipping a shampoo or two. Then, use a wide toothed comb to brush out any tangles. Next, slightly dampen hair with water and apply a volumizing mousse from roots to ends. When hair is damp and coated in product, blow it dry.

Give yourself a deep side part and gather hair into a low ponytail. Placing the ponytail opposite the side part emphasizes the asymmetry of the look. You may want to smooth and pin the side without the braid.

Now you’re ready to start braiding the plait. First, divide the ponytail into two sections and pull out a small section of hair on the right side. Bring the strand over the left hand side and repeat this step on the left. Continue until you reach the end of hair and secure with an elastic or hair tie. For an edgy, mussy look,  pull some strands out at the end.
